Looking for a career?

Published in In-Tech, 15th November 2007

There are lots of career opportunities in the IT industry for graduates who do not have a background in technology, especially in sales, said T.F. Chong, managing director of Hewlett-Packard (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

He said graduates of any discipline can join the sales team of an IT company. Banking graduates, for example, can help promote banking solutions. “Who better understands what a bank needs than a graduate in banking? They are more likely to know how an IT solution can help a bank improve its processes,” said Chong. A graduate’s attitude towards the job is what determines whether he sinks or swims in his chosen career, not what he has studied, according to him.

He will be sharing more of his views at the Starjobs-HP Career Talk this Saturday, from 10am to 1pm at Star Cybertorium and Cyberhub on Level 2 of Menara Star in Petaling Jaya (go to http://star-jobs.com/events/hpcareertalk for more details).

Chong has much experience to share. He is an engineer by training and holds a Masters degree in chip design from Burnell University in Britain. During his stint as an engineer, the salesmen in his company would bring him along on their rounds so that he could better explain the product to potential clients.

He said the clients were more comfortable listening to him explain how the product worked and how it would benefit their businesses. But when they made a sale, the commission would go to the salesmen. “After a while, I decided to give sales a try,” he said with a smile.

Another secret to making it in sales is to clearly tell a customer how the technology can help the business, he said. “If you can master this skill, you will have a successful sales career.” “But you also have to be prepared to work hard and have the right attitude,” he added. — JO TIMBUONG

Chong: Job seekers only need the right attitude to succeed.
