Star-Jobs Red Box Karaoke

Heartiest congratulation to the winners of the Star-Jobs Office Scenario Contest:

I have a boss who likes to order me to do all kinds of things that are not included in my scope of duties. For example, buying drinks and food, sending documents to other companies and so much more. These tasks are supposed to be done by other workers. All this work is burdening me and even making me work overtime.

Should I tell my boss about the problem? Or just wait for compliments from my boss for doing the small and unimportant works?

Part 01
Solution 01:

I will first speak to the other workers and explain the situation to them. Once they are agreeable, I will then speak to my boss and explain that I will designate the small tasks to the other workers who have agreed to take them on. If he asks why, I will explain that I have other assignments. I believe that the boss does not care who does what, the main thing is that the job is done properly.

Solution 02:

You should clarify the issue rather than staying quiet. Talk to colleagues if they are having the same problem. If you are only one, then it is obvious that you should do something. Figure out the problem by confronting your boss. If he is too stubborn to make changes, lodge an official complain to HR / his direct manager as your boss might need to attend counselling.

Solution 03:

Next time when your boss order you, just tell him that you will do his bidding after you have completed your most important task of the day. Then when it is time to go home, just inform him that you will do it tomorrow as you have important things to attend to after work. Keep rejecting him a few times & hopefully he will soon come to his senses & ask other employee to do his bidding. If he is still stubborn and insists on asking you, then you will need to take some action by showing him your offer letter on your job title & role. You don’t have to be afraid to confront him since you are right and he is wrong.

Solution 04:

You should seek a suitable time to talk to your boss about this matter. This means when both of you are not tied up with urgent office matters. Explain to your boss while you are able to cope at the moment (by working overtime), it is not productive as your ability should be utilised in your specialised areas. Try to find out why your boss is making such demands on you.

Solution 05:

There are only two reasons why your boss is making you work out of your scope of duties. Either you are very capable, in which your boss is taking advantage of you, or you are not performing well in your job scope, in which your boss is giving unimportant tasks to fill your time. For both situations, you need to talk to your boss, especially during your appraisal. You need to clarify where you can serve the company best and work towards building that career path. There is no unimportant work in a company. Everyone must play his or her part whether it is the CEO or the tea lady.
